Cintra's bid chosen for the I-77 in North Carolina

The concession will last for 50 years once it opens to traffic, which is scheduled for mid-2018

Cintra has been selected by the North Carolina Department of Transport (NCDOT) as the successful bidder for the design, construction, funding, operation and maintenance of the 41.8-kilometer expansion of the I-77 highway, for a total amount of 655 million dollars (around 478 million euros). The concession will last for 50 years once it opens to traffic, which is scheduled for mid-2018.

According to Enrique Díaz-Rato, CEO of Cintra, “it is a privilege for us to be part of the solution to the traffic congestion problem in Charlotte, North Carolina”. With this project, the investment managed by Cintra in the United States is close to 10.4 billion euros.

“We are proud to work with the State and local leaders to deliver a world-class infrastructure project with the State of North Carolina”, explained Nicolás Rubio, manager of Cintra US. “We hope to become a valued partner for this State and its residents”.

The funding for this project is expected to be closed in the coming months. Design and construction will be carried out by a consortium by Ferrovial Agroman and the U.S. construction company W.C. English.

Construction work is expected to begin in early 2015.

The design includes road expansion, in both directions, along 26 miles (41.8 kilometers) of the I-77 highway in the metropolitan area north of Charlotte, between the links to the I-277 in Charlotte and the NC-150 in Iredell County. To improve traffic in one of the States fastest growing areas, the existing highway will be rebuilt by adding managed lanes to help reduce congestion and improve the corridors operation.

The project is divided into three segments: in the 2.2 mile (3.5 km) southern stretch, the existing section will be renovated and the highway will be expanded with two electronic toll lanes in each direction. In the 14.9 mile (23.8 km) central section, the existing lanes will be renovated and additional toll lanes will be built to create two managed lanes in each direction. For the 8.8 mile (14.2 km) northern segment, the consortium will build a new additional electronic toll lane in each direction.
